Reason’s Name

Corrianna was her name.  She was an African American girl who appeared to be around 11 or 12.  She stood in the hotel elevator alone as I stepped on.

“What is the North American Mission Board?” she asked. She must have noticed the “North American Mission Board” on the tag around my neck.  (She also had to have noticed all of the signs bearing this name around the hotel where we were meeting.)

I answered her question, telling her what this organization does, where it is located, and told her that she can find them on the Internet at namb.net. I asked her name as I stepped off on my floor.  “Corrianna,” she answered.  “I am Shelly,” I said. “Have good day.”

A little later, I thought, “what a missed opportunity!!!”  I mean, she might as well have asked, “Who is God???”  (The main motivation behind NAMB’s existence is to share Christ.) This was such a set-up to tell her about Christ.

There is a reason God tells us to “pray without ceasing” (1 Thessalonians 5:17).  There is a reason that God tells us to “make the most of every opportunity” (Colossians 4:5 ).  Today, for me, reason’s name was Corrianna.

“Father, forgive me for not sharing You with Corrianna.  Send others to witness to her.  Prod her to ask even more questions that eventually lead her to You.  May she come to understand how much You love her and accept the gift of eternal life.  Help me to be more alert and faithful to share You, trusting You with the results.”

The joys and trails of the night shift

This past week I have been working nights at the hospital.  I am a phlebotomist there and nights are a lot slower paced than day shift.  Well, that is until around 3:30 am when morning rounds start.  It is definitely not my favorite shift.  My sleeping and eating patterns get messed up, I don’t get to see my husband or children as much and I am the only phlebotomist on duty so I don’t get to spend time with my other co-workers.  I do however get shift differential pay which makes it a lot easier to handle.

Yesterday morning as I was coming home from work there was the most beautiful sunrise.  I looked just like a picture.  Even as tired as I was, looking at the new day dawning perked me up.  Then last night as I was going to work I was blessed to see an awesome sunset.  The sun looked enormous!  I would probably have missed both of those wonderful moments if I had not been working nights.

You know God changes our course in life sometimes so that we might see something different.  Something that might have been missed if we stayed on the same path.  We get frustrated at times when it seems as though we are being pulled off target, but it is in those very moments that God has set us up to be amazed.

I am so thankful that God places me on the path that He would have for me and not the ones that I might choose.  His way is not always the easiest, but it is most certainly the best.  Thank you Lord for all that You show me each and every day!

Best on the Menu

Nachos is one of my favorite splurge (eaten on ocassion) foods. When I order them from my favorite restaurant, I tell the waitress what I want on them.  She brings back my order arranged just as I ordered.

Well, during a recent “to go” order, the waitress informed me that she was going to read the order back to me.  She  explained that since “you have to input the order according to what is actually staying on the order, she wanted to insure that I got my nachos exactly the way that I wanted them.” (Was this customer service or what??!!)

As she went down the list, I had to stop her at least three times because there was either something stated that I might want if I knew what it was or something that I definitely didn’t want. (Who knew that corn was even an option!!)

Nevertheless, when I received my nachos, I was beyond pleased because I enjoyed them with additional options that I had TOTALLY missed before.

I am so glad that God does not give me everything the way I ask for it.  I mean there have been some prayers expressed that sounded great.  From my limited perspective, that “job”, that “trip”, etc., sounded good to me.

God is the only One who sees ALL of the options.  At the same time, He knows the best of what to bring me (and you)—arranged as it needs to be.  I (we) simply need to trust Him because “He can do infinitely more than we can ask or imagine” (Ephesians 3:20).  He gives us the best on the menu every time.

“Father, you are right in every situation.  Your will is best despite our limited understanding.  May we entrust You with our desires, yet trust You to act on our behalf as You deem best.”

Road Trip Treasured

Road and Oil seed - HDRI went to my cousin’s wedding over the weekend.  He’s 33 and married a young woman he’s been dating for awhile.  We were very excited for him. So, I drove to Atlanta, picked up my parents and then we were off to Alabama.  Although I do not love driving, I do love a good road trip!!! This one had potential.

The two and a half hour trip seemed much longer because we had the majority of the miles on the back roads.  My mom and I chatted most of the way down (okay…the entire trip—there and back).  Dad sat in the back either snoozing or simply looking out the window.

All of a sudden, memories flooded my mind of road trips as a child.  Dad and mom would load up the car, and my sister and I would pile into the back. (This was before my younger brother was born.)

We went to DC, Florida, all over Alabama, and other places at random.  At that time, I was in the back seat, looking out the window or snoozing.

Although I volunteered to drive since Dad’s vision isn’t what it used to be, and Mom’s night vision isn’t great, I wondered, “when did this happen?  When did I become the driver?”

I did not mind the drive, as I love them very much.  In the good and bad times (the right and wrongs too), they were there—even when I failed to realize the importance of “there” or understood the scope of its meaning.

Dad talked a little louder at the restaurant table, and mom and I laughed quietly to ourselves Saturday as we stole glances at each other.  I knew what she was thinking….”are we really this old?”

When I hugged mom and dad good-bye before heading back to Louisville, they thanked me “for the sacrifice”.  I had to respond with, “no, thank you for the sacrifices.  This was my pleasure.”

It’s a road trip to treasure for years to come!

Tar Balls and Oil on the Beach

Our recent trip to the Gulf of Mexico was marred by the BP oil spill.  On the day we arrived, the beautiful white sands were covered with dark globs of oil.  The next day cleanup crews arrived to begin daily vigils cleaning up the beach so that we could enjoy it most of the week.

Everyday we watched as large masses of oily sheen flowed past our condo.  Some days fingers of oil licked the shore.  Most days little tar balls washed ashore.  We were able to be in the water some – water that looked perfectly clear and clean, yet within sight were ships skimming oil from the water, helicopters flying low to track the path of the globs of oil, and the ever present workers scooping piles of tar balls and blobs from the sand.

I couldn’t help but think of sin when I watched the dark patches dotting the calm water  and beautiful sands of the Gulf.  How like the sin lurking in our lives!  Sometimes it’s very visible for all to see; other times it shows up only on occasion; and other times it is completely invisible to others, yet it leaves little dirty patches behind.

Temptations and our sinful nature are always present and a constant factor in our lives.  But we have a better cleanup plan than the one being improvised in the Gulf! Our massive “oil spills” down to our tiny “tar balls” are covered by the blood of Jesus!  He will clean us up from all our sins and make up white as snow! For I know my transgressions, and my sin is always before me.  Cleanse me…and I will be clean; wash me, and I will be whiter than snow.  Psalm 51:3, 7

We need to prayfully search out the sin in our lives and confess them to our Lord so we can be washed clean!  The consequences of those sins may still need to be dealt with just as with the lasting effects of the oil spill, but we can be forever forgiven!

Memories No One Can Steal

Someone stole my camera when I was on vacation. The camera was a display unit that I had purchased at a fraction of the cost.  The pictures were priceless.

Looking at the last scenes of Tamarindo, Costa Rica during the hour long ride to the Liberian International Airport, I was grateful for more memories made and shared with my family.  Eight hours, two planes and a taxi cab ride later, we were back in Maryland, at my sister’s house.

As I unpacked, I was eager to revisit my pictures.  I looked in every compartment of my suit cases, but the camera wasn’t there.  Eventually, I had to come to grips with the fact that it had been stolen at Customs.

Worse things have happened, right?  That’s all that I could think about as I sat beside my luggage.  (This is a lesson that God is allowing me to grasp even more as I grow older.)

So, instead, I chose to focus on the memories….of walks along the beach with my sister, her husband and my nephew as we went to the small town of Tamarindo–almost on a daily basis.

There were memories of watching my nephew dive to the bottom of the pool, stand on his hands and blow bubbles.  (I remember when he wouldn’t even jump in the water!!!)

There were memories of getting caught in the rain during one of our trips into town. We laughed so hard while we ran for shelter underneath a cement overhang.

Then there was the river boat ride where we saw the wild life of Costa Rica, such as crocodiles, monkeys, birds of various colors, and much more.

So, again, my camera was stolen, but worse things have happened.  Next time, I hope to use better judgment and pack such things in my carry on–even if I have to stuff them.

In the meantime, I am praising God for memories of a lifetime, which no one can steal.

True Freedom

Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.  John 8:32

Because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit of life set me free from the law of sin and death.  Romans 8:2

The 4th of July, Independence Day for the United States of America, is historically a day of celebration.  We commemorate our nation’s independence from England with fireworks, picnics, and parades.  It’s a happy time!  We love our freedom!

Our free government did not and still does not come cheaply.  Thousands of men and women have died over the past 200+ years to secure our liberties.  Many families have given the ultimate sacrifice of their loved ones’ lives that we might live in this free nation.  We tend to forget the cost while we enjoy our rights.

Our free nation is just a temporary entity and could be overthrown by a hostile government or crumble from its shaky foundation through corruption and/or lack of morals.  If that were to happen, we would no longer be the free democracy of which we’ve become accustomed.

As Christians, we do, however, have an everlasting freedom.  Jesus gave us our ultimate freedom, one that is free to those who accept it but was far from cheap.  It was costly.  Jesus took on the sins of the world and died on the cross so that we might go free:  free from sin, free from death, free from the evils of this world!

Someday another country might attack us and take away our free nation, but no one can take away our freedom from sin if we have Jesus as our Lord and Savior. But now that you have beenset free from sin and have become slaves to God, the benefit you reap leads to holiness, and the result is eternal life.  Forthe wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.  Romans 6:22-23

Grand time in Grand Rivers!

This past weekend, I enjoyed Grand Rivers, the village between the lakes!  Located on Lake Barkley and the Kentucky Lake, Grand Rivers is indeed a village filled with authentic charm.  Moreover, the people of Grand Rivers Baptist Church provide an extra bit of charm and warmth themselves.

Pastor Mark Gill invited me to speak this past Sunday during what they affectionately callled ”Thank God for Senior Saints” day.  (They are filling their summer Sunday’s with reasons to intentionally thank God for various things/people.)  It was my privilege and definitely my blessing.

I met Mark and his wife Debbie Saturday afternoon.  We began the evening at Patti’s 1800’s Settlement Restaurant.  For years, I had heard about this restaurant (famous for their 2 inch pork chops and so much more), but I never had the privilege to eat there.

Well, that has changed.  I have now joined the ranks of those who have dined at Patti’s.  No, I didn’t try the 2 inch (or the 1 inch) pork chop, but I can say that the salmon is divine!!!

Following dinner, Mark and Debbie treated me to a play at the Badgett Playhouse. To say that I was surprised to see such talent in a small village is an understatement.  It was the close of a wonderful evening.

Sunday morning, as I was checking out, Ms. Johnnie, the hotel’s breakfast hostess, came over.  Dressed in full costume of someone from the 30’s, she was an absolute dear heart!!!  She offered me everything from waffles to biscuits and gravy to pastries and boiled eggs.  (I took a mini muffin and a yogurt to go.  Who could say “no” to Ms. Johnnie!!!???!)

When I arrived at Grand Rivers Baptist Church, it was a warm and affectionate greeting even in the parking lot.  I received hugs, words of affirmation, laughs, and so much more throughout the rest of the day.

Grand Rivers, Kentucky would be an excellent weekend getaway.  If you go, be sure and visit Grand Rivers Baptist Church, and tell them Shelly says “hello”!!!

No Time Out…

Sunday afternoon, as I spent the day with my sister and her family, we decided to finish the day off in the pool.  It began with a friendly game of volley ball.  So, with my life jacket snugly in place, my nephew and I went against my sister.  (My brother-in-law decided to be the “referee.”)

About an hour later, my nephew decided that he wanted to play “war” with the pumping water guns.  I quickly decided to be a spectator as he and my sister play for blood!!!

As they battled it out with goggles in place, the water squirts were rapid and fierce.  All of a sudden, my sister called “time out” because she had to readjust her goggles. (Trust me…the goggles were your only defense!)  Missing no opportunity AND showing no mercy, my nephew yelled, “there’s no time out in war!” Then he began pelting her with streams of water.

We all laughed really hard, but isn’t it true?  We don’t get time out in spiritual war either.  Our “enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour” (1 Peter 5:8, NIV).  Therefore we are instructed to be self-controlled and alert and resist him, “standing firm in the faith…” (vs. 8 and 9).

The enemy takes shots at us showing no mercy and missing no opportunities while using more than water-gun arsenal.  Although we don’t get time out, we do have more than mere goggles as our defense.  The God of grace is our strong deliverer, and He has given us all that we need to extinguish the flaming arrows of the enemy (Eph. 6:10-18).

”Father, show us how to properly suit up daily.  You are our only defense against the darts of the enemy.  As we adjust and follow your structions, we will stand firm. Thank you for giving us all that we need to live abundantly.”

It’s A Small World

For the past seven years, I have vacationed with my sister and her family.  We have cruised the Caribbean twice, flown to Aruba, and have visited Jamaica (three times).  As I type, I am in beautiful Costa Rica!

Again, I am in awe of God’s creation.  Nevertheless, as only He can orchestrate, He brings the familiar in the mix.  Let me explain.  I sat pool side with my sister and her husband watching my nephew play with his new friends (neither spoke the other’s language, yet they connected).  A couple leisurely strolled by.  (It’s a stroll that I have come to enjoy since I arrived three days ago.)

The woman asked me for the time as her husband began to converse with Roger, my brother-in-law.  He asked where we were from, and Roger responded “Maryland.”  Before I could respond, he said that they were from…….Kentucky.  Really??!!! I replied.  I live there as well.

The gentleman asked where?  Louisville, I replied.  ”So do we”, they said in unison!  ”Thanks for coming to Costa Rica to meet us,” the gentleman continued jokingly.  We talked a little more, and then they went on their way.

Before leaving the states, I remember talking with God and wondering how I would connect in Costa Rica.  (Only my brother-in-law speaks Spanish.)  Yet He amazed me as I watched two  kids connect dispite their language barrier.  (They played together for hours!!!)

All I could say was, “it’s a small world, but we serve a big God!” Only God could orchestrate such a meeting and connections, reminding us of His power—from Louisville, KY to Costa Rica and beyond!

Shelly Johns

P.S.  If you see weird typed characters in this post, it is because, the resort’s guest computers were down.  So, they allowed me to use their office computers.  The keyboard definitely had a spanish flavor! Smile.
