Are You Dressed Properly?

I was listening to a podcast the other day by Jim Cymbala. He posed the question, “Are you dressing properly?” In my mind, I began walking through my closet while taking a mental inventory of the wardrobe I own. I really need to clean out my closet! It was crowded in there! I digress. As important as it is to dress modestly and present with a neat and clean appearance, this was not at all what Pastor Cymbala was getting at with his message. He followed his question with a passage of scripture that got my attention!

Colossians 3:12-14

Therefore, as God’s chosen people holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievance you may have against one another. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.

Then… as you read down a bit further in Colossians 3:17:

And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.

I read and re-read the first part in verse 12, “Therefore, as God’s chosen people holy and dearly loved” and my stomach nearly fluttered with butterflies.

We really are God’s chosen people holy and dearly loved! It is one thing to be loved, but to be called holy and dearly loved is quite another I’d say.

Interestingly enough, I recall another comment Pastor Cymbala made on a different podcast about love. He said it is the love of God through Christ that draws people to Himself for salvation, not threats from God over sinful living.

Are we dressing properly? Are we wearing the wardrobe of His Word found in Colossians?

  • Compassion
  • Kindness
  • Humility
  • Gentleness
  • Patience
  • Forgiveness
  • Love

How do you know if you’re underdressed?

  • Lack Compassion toward others
  • Fail to show Kindness
  • Prideful
  • Act harshly with others
  • Give up on people quickly
  • Harbor Un-forgiveness
  • Withhold Love

I was thinking of a few times I’ve failed to get dressed properly and what that might have looked like to others.

Delayed flights and lost bags can certainly bring out the worst in a road weary traveler just dying to get home and sleep in her own bed! I try to mind my Ps and Qs, I really do, but I’ve had a few not so nice gait agents be nasty to me FIRST when I’ve fallen victim to the occasional not so great customer service of Delta airlines. Did you catch that, they wronged me FIRST! I have every right to snap back or post a complaint on Facebook! Not so fast, maybe a positive response would serve me better than a negative reaction. Just what if the person who was nasty to me first has some of the following circumstances:

  • A spouse who just walked out on them after 20 years of marriage.
  • A parent dying of cancer.
  • A child hooked on drugs.

We need to pause and consider how others behaving badly may be an indicator of an underlying issue in need of compassion, kindness, gentleness, humility, patience, forgiveness, and whole lot of LOVE!
