PSALMS 37:4 DELIGHT IN THE LORD
I want to restate for you this verse since it has been some time since my original post regarding how the scriptures in Psalms 37:3-8 can teach us how to live a joyful life. Verse 4 states: “Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart.” (NIV) In the King James Version we read, “Delight thyself also in the Lord; and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart.” What comes to mind when you think about the meaning of the word “delight?” Perhaps it’s easier for you to know the feeling but difficult to express in words.
The Chronological Life Application Study Bible gives an explanation that is illuminating. “To delight in someone means to experience great pleasure and joy being with that person. This happens only when we know that person well. Thus, to delight in the Lord we must know him better.” (p. 567) To experience a more joyful life is to be willing to invest in my relationship with Him. (Note: If this is the first time you have read my post, I write in the first person with the goal of it seeming more personal to you.)
But I know I must be willing to honestly examine my motive for obeying this instruction. Do I want to “delight in the Lord” so I get what I want OR do I want to delight in Him because of who He is? Do I want to get the desires of my heart when I want it? The key to this aspect of joyful living is to receive from the Lord the desires of my heart in His timing because His timing is always perfect and of course, He knows the big picture, the overarching plan of my life. There is a huge difference between getting and receiving. When I try to get something when I want it, I am circumventing God. I want to be in control and of course the joy of doing that is non-existent. When I receive a desire of my heart from the Lord in His way, it is always better than I could have imagined, resulting in joy!
