Together In Community

I love to write about community. About people living life together. It’s close to my heart, and ultimately, where I feel Jesus is. We represent Christ well when we live as one body. There is a wonderful group of women who I “do life” with. Jen Hatmaker would call them my “tribe”. They are the blessings that love me through my imperfections, struggles, and flaws. I am able to be real and genuine with them. We serve together. We study Scripture together. Many of us rear our children together. I glean insight from them. I watch them grow in their walk with the Lord. They encourage me to grow. We spur one another on. It’s a wonderful life.

It isn’t perfect. There have been times when the nature of our flesh has gotten in the way. I have been guilty of doing wrong. Others have. We have to step in with love, grace, and forgiveness. Our group is learning to go outside of itself. We are becoming the hands and feet of Jesus, together. I am blessed to watch them use the spiritual gifts the Holy Spirit has given them. They are leaders. They are warriors. They are Gospel bearers.

I stand back and look at these women who I have had the pleasure of knowing and think about where we began over two years ago. Myself and one other lady meeting in a room of our church. Just a leading in my Spirit and obedience. Now, over twenty women coming together a couple times a month. Never at the same time as lives take us in so many directions, but consistently investing ourselves in the Word, each other, and others. It is beautiful. The Holy Spirit is beautiful.

This discipleship “thing” has come full circle. I see these ladies stepping out. I am not surprised, but I am still amazed at how God chooses to use people like us. Redeemed sinners. Broken in our own ways, but made whole through Him. And I am grateful. Grateful for community. For the chance to learn and teach. For the wisdom that is shared and the life that is lived, together. For the burdens we bear and the joy we experience, together.

Nothing can replace the design and desire that God has placed in us for community. “So, being affectionately desirous of you, we were ready to share with you not only the gospel of God but also our own selves, because you had become very dear to us.” (1 Thessalonians 2:8) Life is best lived together in the light of the Gospel. The bond that I share with these women causes me to better understand who Jesus is, who I am, and who I am called to be.

Community is difficult to find. It is difficult to maintain. But whatever season of life you are in or wherever you are, seek to live the life God has given you with believers around you. No matter where God has called my husband and me, He has surrounded us with a great cloud of witness. There have been people to live the Christian journey with. Are you living life with others? Are you a part of something bigger than yourself? Are you learning and passing it on? We are called to go and make disciples. My prayer is that your walk with God would explode as you live for Him in community bringing others in every step of the way.

Be blessed!
