Why Worry if you Pray?

For years I had a poster on my refrigerator which said, “Why Worry when you can pray?  Why pray if you are going to worry?”  That quote has stuck with me.  How often do we pray about a thing and then get up and say, “What am I going to do?”

There are at least 54 Bible verses about worry.  The one that brings it home for me is

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:6-7 ESV

That is Word and is so true.

There is nothing like God’s peace. The peace of God comes when we are able to pray about a thing and leave it to God, Holy Spirit, and Jesus to handle it.  He always does; one way or the other!  It may not be the way we would want it handled, but his thoughts are not our thoughts and His ways are not our ways (Isaiah 55:8) and what He does is always best for us. When we let Him keep control. He will be a lamp for your feet and a light on your path (Psalm 119:105).  He will let you know what you are to do.  I speak from personal experiences.

He said “Cast your cares upon Him” (1 Peter 5:6-7), “For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” (Matthew 11:28-30)

Worry cause stress and how we handle stress can kill us; physically, emotionally, and or mentally.   That is not what God wants for us.  He wants us to “prosper and be in good health even as our soul prospers.” (3 John 1:2)

I could go on and on with scriptures, I can assume you know Word.  The question is how can you really apply it and set aside worry.  Pray and STAND ON HIS WORD!

I make it a practice to not worry.  Trust me, there have been many times that worry could have taken over.  When I think about all God has done for me and the many “worry” situations he has brought me through, all I can do is trust Him and let him do His work.

I don’t want to make you glad twice.  Glad you are reading this and glad I stopped writing!

Tips on how to Stop Worry in your life

Pray and leave it alone.  For some, that is easier said than done.  Why?

Focus on the Word “He will keep you in perfect peace if your mind is stayed on Him” (Isaiah 26:3).

Serenity Prayer – Ask yourself “What can I do about this situation NOW?”  If you have no control over the situation, why worry about it? If you can do something about it; Do it.  If you choose to do nothing when you can; there is absolutely no reason to worry.

Leave the past in the past.  If God intended for us to look back, in his infinite wisdom, He would have put eyes in the back of our heads.  They are in front so we can look forward.

Examine your worry.  Dale Carnegie suggest you write out and answer the following questions:

What is the problem?  What are the causes for the problem?  What are the possible solutions?  What is the best solution?  Once a decision is made, take action! I might add, pray over the decision.

Speak life not worry. Develop a mental attitude leading to peace and happiness.  I have surrounded myself with positive words in every room in my house to keep me focused on a positive state of mind.

Finally, sit down and write down everything you are worried about.  Put your worries in a sealed envelope and put it away for six months.  What you are apt to find is 70% is needless worry – 20% took care of itself and only 5% was possibly worth worrying about, that is if you didn’t pray!
